Network cable question...

Ho long is the longest run of network cable I can run?

I really need to run one that is about 22Meters, I have seen 20M cables, but is there much signal degradation?

Also, would using Cat6 cable make any difference at all??

Re: Network cable question...

You won't have any issues with 20/22m.

For Cat5e the longest run you can have is 100m. After that you've got to start adding switches.

Max segment length for both Cat 5 & 6 is 100m - http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Categ...segment_length

Re: Network cable question...

The path the cable is to take is also a factor to consider. For example running it parallel to pipes and mains cables will hurt the signal quality.

Re: Network cable question...

Its to go from my living room to my upstairs "computer room".

Would be run along the skirting of the room then under the carpet, up the stairs skirting and then into the computer room.

lol.. Oh yeah..

Basically, there are no radiators/mains cabling etc on the run I have planned, which is what I was getting at really.

As has been said, provided its less than 100m, you should be fine.

Re: Network cable question...

Have you thought about homeplug? My house was built in the 60s and they decided to include a huge <insert material> metal bar for strengthening throughout the house. This means that mobile and wireless are pretty dire and i'd been putting up with it for 3-4 years. Recently switched since wires through the house aren't an option and I'm really happy with it. Saw something similar to this on offer somewhere for under 25 quid:
TP-Link TL-PA211KIT 200Mbps Mini Powerline Ethernet Adapter - Twin Pack: Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories TP-Link TL-PA211KIT 200Mbps Mini Powerline Ethernet Adapter - Twin Pack: Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories

If you're dead set on cabling though, everything has been answered above!
