Steam <3

And by <3 I mean I hate it. Whenever I have money it takes it from me. But if I'm buying something, Steam usually wins out of sheer conveinance. It also saves some space, as I've got upwards of 100 PC games lying about in boxes. It's good not having to add to the collection when I buy another game.

lol, fair point. They obviously didn't survey Rasher either

With faster broadband speeds I'm slowly being converted to digital downloads, with the biggest plus point being space saved, as you said. Now that I have a large array of Steam cache files backed-up I find it great, but getting to this point has certainly been a pain.

A very interesting read POB and good comment DA. I agree that Steam is easy, having all your games in one place, but call me old-fashioned but I love my game collection. Seeing it sitting on my book case is part of the experience for me and I love it when developers go that extra mile to make the game case and content a bit different.

I like having special editions of games with physical soundtracks, artwork, art books and that kind of thing. While that can get downloaded digitally now in PDFs and zip files of music, I just prefer to have a collection at home. That way you can scare off people by your wall of discs.

I'm the same, I love having collections of games rather than showing people an almost endless list of computer-loaded titles *cough*Rasher*Cough*.

I'm the same in that regard. I do like buying limited editions of certain things, but that's also a downfall of mine. I bought the BioShock 2 special edition, despite not enjoying the first game, because I loved the games artwork and the style it had - I really wanted the old-looking posters and the record. I haven't even played the second. I just wanted the things that came with the game.

Re: Gamers still prefer physical game discs, according to UK survey

Now I really can't be bothered with special edition goodies. My house is cluttered enough already.
Even games like GTA that come with fold out maps really needn't have bothered as far as I'm concerned. After a cursory glance when I first got the game they never came out of the box.
Steam works for me. And one of the biggest advantages in my book is that I don't have to have a CD in the drive to play.

Re: Gamers still prefer physical game discs, according to UK survey

when steam first arrived i was sceptical, i would prefer to go out and buy the disc, but now i prefer steam by a long shot its easy and convenient, can access my games anywhere, hit up friends with it, the whole package is fantastic, i just wish more developers would take advantage of steam works.

<3 Steam, don't have to hunt for the damn discs and serials to play games now.

Re: Gamers still prefer physical game discs, according to UK survey

tbh, console owners are obviously going to say physical media, they have a limited amount of space on their consoles, 250gb tops? whats PS3 500gb? so while yes they can do digital downloads, i suspect they would hit the drive limit fairly quickly. Also you set off a download on the xbox, go play a game and the download is paused so they wait longer.

Whereas PC's you're looking 500 gig as a bare minimum in pc systems these days, i know someone who has a terabyte which is filled by steam games (hi rash) and the sheer convenience of just setting off a download then doing other things and pow, there's the game off you play. So really you can't really get any valid market research from that can you? You need physical media for the consoles while PC's sway to digital distribution.

Also is that survey open to the public to view, I don't see a link to it or the results in the post.

One thing that Steam can't do (yet) is reproduce that fresh manufacturing smell you get in brand new manuals

Mmmm that is indeed an awesome smell!

As for the topic at hand, I like having collections of games for my consoles and where there is a choice I will usually go for the special editions as I love having little gaming collectables and nik naks floating around the place.

Pc games though, I prefer to have them on steam. Its so much easier to just say hmm, yeah I want that click, buy and download without the hassle of getting yourself into town and home again! I do find steam to be a little pricey on games sometimes but I guess thats the price you pay for convenience.
