Terry Pratchet: Shaking Hands with Death

Quote:
One of the world's most popular authors gives the 34th Richard Dimbleby Lecture from the Royal College of Physicians in London.

Sir Terry Pratchett announced in 2007 that he had been diagnosed with a rare form of early-onset Alzheimer's disease. In his keynote lecture, Shaking Hands with Death, he explores how modern society, confronted with an increasingly older population, many of whom will suffer from incurable illnesses, needs to redefine how it deals with death.

The acclaimed creator of the bestselling Discworld series, he is the first novelist to give the Richard Dimbleby Lecture. His books have sold more than 65 million copies and have been translated into 37 languages.

Managed to catch the end of this last night; it will be an absolute shame to see such an intelligent and witty mind succumb unnecessarily to dementia.

<3 Terry Pratchett's books. I have intentions of owning all the Discworld books, I've got a decent collection now, but still a fair way off.

What a fantastic programme, absolutely fantastic. I knew the guy was a genius, but that speech he wrote..just, wow.

Everything he wrote was how I see this whole 'assisted suicide/death' thing, it will be a true shame when he passes away. It makes you wonder if we're loosing the truely fantastic brains in this world, slowly but surely, seems from my point of view, we won't have anything even close to Sir P, and other such amasing people as him, in say 20-30 years time.

Re: Terry Pratchet: Shaking Hands with Death

Been an avid reader of his books, always wanted to own the full collection and trying my best to get them.

Would recommend them to anyone, at least read Mort and Guards Guards.

Re: Terry Pratchet: Shaking Hands with Death

I can see his being the celebrity death that completely hollows me out. I've read the Discworld books all my life, I think I first read Wings when I was still in first school. I've loved his novels since before I even understood any of the jokes.

I know I'm going to be absolutely devastated when he succumbs.
