the desire culture we live in post 1945

I was in stockholm the other week, listening to /Malcolm McLaren.....quite the bit of a tosspot really, but still informative and it's always nice for a brit to realign my sensibilities....all english people as Malcom puts it are Liers, Cheaters and decievers

He was brought up after the war by his gran whom was of the Victorian Era.
And you forget the world in general didn't live in excess....aside from the aristocrats.
But the average Pleb...well....they just lived to get by on a day to day basis.
The culture of necessity.....as Malcolm put it.

But alas comes America....it's infrastructure virtually untouched by the war.
So they are sitting pretty, with the machinery of commerical produce kicked into overload to allow to rebuild up the shattered Europe.

And "stores" pop up...retail outlets selling jeap american products like Jeans, and stuff......alongside this goes the adverts.

Now the new world is dragged into the American led "culture of desire".
Unessecary items advertised as items that we can't live without.
We desire them, because we are introduced to the concept our lives are miserable without them.
And we are, when our mates by the items and we are left out.

When he created the Sex pistols he wanted to fight back this tide with anti-distablishment.....(a marketed version, like spice girls and girl power)

I wouldn't have minded but the next guest speaker was the Head of the Design group for Sony Eriksson and in her speach of designing for the product was a bullet point for Generating desires for products that the public do not know they want yet.

The third and final speaker was a leader in the iterative production cycle, trying to get feedback from their customers to streamline their product and their corporate images to make them a house name so you buy into them religiously because of the service they have provided you....service being a codeword for convincing your mind....brainwashing.

and I'm sat there taking all this in, eagerly, wishing I had papper and pen to write it all down, but something deep down....a reflex action.....something wanting to fight against it all.....trying not get smothered.

Worst yet, shops, stores, avertisers....they have psychologists, and people who "study" people. As Dr. Phil stated when it comes to "designs" of shops and their layouts with appropriate advertising, its pyschological warefare when you step into a shop, and sadly "they" have already WON the battle man decades ago.

and now these uber products of "communication" that are sold because we want them, not knowing anything more than they look cool and with those extra features my life is going to be better, sadly are evolving....destroying the normal community of man kind....face to face communities are duying, households are bastians...fortresses of communication hubs as we surf in virtual worlds, actually DEMANDING more connection, more space, more memory, more slick gui's, the desire is balancing in a need to get virtual, and driving the market with our assumed necessity in this dream.

The propaganda exists...the children of the pre war era are dead.
Our staples for today, our conerstones that define out Paradigm of the western world are all based on a culture of desire.
(that's what you get reading odd sci-fi book summaries on Wiki)

simplest example of that is having the bakery odour pumped into the foyer of the supermarket.

99% of people love that fresh bread smell. its alluring.

shops also have habits of frequently moving the shop around (marks and spencers are reknowned for this). makes you have to search what your looking for in the hope you find something else.

the biggest culprits of this is actually women. theres a picture on the internet showing a man and woman shopping...and the paths they take, which is quite funny.

marketing strategies have already nailed the women to the floor with their shopping psychology, they are now doing it for men.

Im seeing more and more adverts for men's health products, from deoderant to wrinkle cream to the brilliant "just for men"

can hardly say its america's fault.
its jealousy.
somebody has xx thing, somebody else gets jealous and they want it too. then other people see and they want it to and it carries on like that.

also, people are continually making products to make peoples lives easier/more enjoyable/less boring etc.

if the yanks didnt do it someone else would have
