America you scare me!

http://www.wired.co.uk/magazine/arch...ack-box?page=1

I knew they were big on there spying but had no idea it went this far, they can pretty much keep a copy of the Internet and a lot more, anything done online that goes anywhere near the US is stored.

Not long before this country follows suit, getting there fast with all the new laws there trying to pass.

Welcome to 1984...

Re: America you scare me!

Encryption seems pointless now, they store the data and if they want to they crack it in the future when they have the tech.

Basically if they want to read your emails / bank statements / Facebook information they can.

Yea for now they justify it with the whole terrorist / CP thing but come on, you would have to be very naive if you think that's where they will stop, I bet the Police for example will get access to whatever info on you they want for any crime you commit big or small.

With respect "Don't commit crimes" is both simplistic and naive.

what about doing things that aren't crimes now but become crimes when the government of the day decides that they are? Since 1997, an average of 2,685 laws have been passed every year. Some of those will almost certainly have made something you like to do illegal in some way.

Yeah, I'd say it's hard stay perfectly within the lines of the law for the most of us.

My comment was made in jest though, wasn't meant to be serious!

But your post raises an interesting question. Can you be done for something that becomes illegal - but that you haven't done since the law was passed?

Re: America you scare me!

As far as I am aware no, it would have to be illegal at the time you committed the act.

That.

I'm still against interweb snooping. Say I'm accused of a crime (wrongly) and the police investigate. Lets say they suspect I illegally torrented a copy of Legally Blonde 2.

Now, lets be clear - I didn't. Not for any moral reason, just that Legally Blonde 2 deserves nothing less than full Blu-ray quality.

I suppose during the course of the investigation the police would see my internet history and discover that I'm a massive, massive pervert. While not a crime itself, this knowledge would cause me a great deal of distress and would be a huge breach of privacy. I don't want to have to go through that.

More importantly, such an experience would sully my future enjoyment of Reese Witherspoon's classic film.

Generally speaking that is correct although the US have set the precedent for prosecuting someone under a law that was passed after the crimes were committed. (David Hicks)

I for one wouldn't trust the US government not to do it again as far as I could throw a lardy Texan, and of course if something is against the law in the States then our government would hand the perpetrator over without a murmur.
