What does 'Cut' do?

I haven't really thought about it properly til recently, but what does 'Cut' (Ctrl + X) actually do, and how does it differ from copy and paste?

It's weird, you know all the other ones but that has just been there without me really knowing what it does.

Re: What does 'Cut' do?

Copy makes a duplicate of the item, cut removes it from the document, allowing you to paste it back in where you want.

Similar to copying it, pasting it, then going back and deleting it.

Eh, it's all too confusing to me, I shall stick to the Copy and Paste routine. Thanks anyway Dawson

Re: What does 'Cut' do?

How is it confusing?

Copy makes a copy of the item, meaning you have the original staying in place but you can also paste it somewhere else.

Cut, removes the item from the document, leaving you to paste it somewhere else.

Copy - what it says on the tin
Cut - what it says on the tin.

Psh, simple gingers.

For "cut", think "move".

Re: What does 'Cut' do?

either way a "copy" is made in your clipboad. Cut removes the original, copy retains the original.

it's really not that hard

Alternatively:

If you pikey a game, you're copying it..

If you go and steal the game from a shelf you're cutting it...

Ahhh, so I get it now. Just clicked. Cut deletes the selected passage as well as copying it

But it's not copying it.

To add another analogy, it's like making a drawing cutting around it with a pair of scissors (cutting) and gluing (pasting) it to another bit of paper. After you have cut it from it's original piece of paper it is no longer there, albeit in the computer case it can be easily reattached where it came from by just pasting it back.

It is indeed good because the big difference between cut and copy is after pasting the contents of a cut are no longer on the clipboard.

Copy is like tracing the drawing and pasting is the act of running over the trace onto another page, it can be done over and over again onto as many pages as necessary.
