When it is the best time to change a game formula?

Prompted by another thread.

We've all done it, complain about a future release or planned sequel before we've actually had time to try it out.

So when is it right to change a games format to introduce some "originality" or when does it become a rehash of a previous incarnation?

Sometimes we complain that too many changes have occured in a sequal that ruins the gameplay from the first, and sometimes we complain that there's not enough change to make the game worthy of a second title.

Three games that spring to mind.

1) Devil May Cry.

The first incarnation was brilliant, and you wanted more of the same.
DMC2 was a change and was ruined a little.

2) Final Fantasy

This seems to have the balance just right. They tripped a bit with going from FFX to FFX-2, but got it back on form for FF XII.

3) PES/Fifa - I've never played these myself, so cant give an accurate comment, but from the looks of things, it seems very little changes. The graphics tend to be updated as do the roster of players. But I wouldnt have thought theres much you can change to a game of football.
