The cost of AvP on Steam - Greedy?
Hi,
I do like my games digitally on-demand for life on Steam... however...
Steam are asking EUR 49.99 for AvP when I can get the physical DVD from Amazon or the like for about GBP 18.00 (EUR 21). GBP 18 is ~58% cheaper than Steam's EUR price.
Out of interest, how much is AvP in GBP on steam? I can check but not at this very second. Be handy to know.
I guess its still 58% cheaper to by it physically?
Just lining up an Amazon basket atm.
Cheers
Kyle

Re: The cost of AvP on Steam - Greedy?
its £24.99 for UK steam. Also Nex had listed it to be £16.95 over on Zavvi.co.uk as per this thread http://forums.gamegrin.com/showthrea...ighlight=zavvi

Re: The cost of AvP on Steam - Greedy?
Thx Wedge...
28% cheaper at Amazon than UK steam... so is life time download worth 28%? hmmmm
Its incredible that steam are asking ~41% more than the GBP/UK price. Sick actually.

Re: The cost of AvP on Steam - Greedy?
me and rasher have spoken about this on skype a few times. i would be all for buying the game on disk if i could then sync it up to steam and make sure all updates are downloaded from there. the issue with disc is a) can get broken b) patches will be a nightmare like you said if money is no object steam is the way but i cant help but feel 17 quid instead of 24.99 it does seem a awful lot

Re: The cost of AvP on Steam - Greedy?
I am in the same boat
Its almost £10 cheaper at Zavvi
also BFBC2 is £10 cheaper to buy in the shops than steam
now my issue is, both Luke and i want these games
but that is a massive £40 more buying them on steam
Also trying to work this out because as most know, i am a sucker for digital download
love the idea of it and how it works and i always buy games on steam that i already own if they come down cheap enough
So the thing is, if Steam did a half price deal in say 3 or 4 month
muggings here (me) would buy it
but if i have already bought the disk version, its going to be costing me the same as buying it on steam now.
There seems to be a lot of mix up at the moment, they are saying AvP requires Steam
If we can buy the disk, install it and run it through steam from now on, that would be great, but i cant seem to get that information confirmed.
( news about steam/avp here)

Re: The cost of AvP on Steam - Greedy?
Thx for sharing Si!
Good point Rash... I was thinking the same... if you can get the physical version and pop the key in steam and its added to steam... that would be the way to go. That would be MEGA!
I've not been able to confirm this either, I was looking before I first brought up the topic.
There is a list of keys you can add to steam, AvP not on this list as yet.
https://support.steampowered.com/kb_...7480-wusf-3601
My personal preference would be to order from steam in the UK, the lifetime digital delivery and auto-update is worth the bit extra for me. That's if I can't buy a key cheaper and add it to steam.

Its nice to see a few different faces talking about the prices differences for a change.
Discs can get broken buts lets be honest if you look after them you very rarely have a problem athlough there was those faulty battlefield discs if memory serves correct and while perhaps not strictly legal there's always nocd patches to hand.
Patches are no different to before steam came along so we have all been there and done that and I still do.

As you say Rash £40 quid is a lot of money but remember if you do go the retail route and it doesnt work with steam and you buy it on steam at a later date you can always flog your retails copies on.

Re: The cost of AvP on Steam - Greedy?
The convenience factor for me will trump even a tenner price difference every time.
I used to maintain a 200Gb patch folder on my media box, and with the advent of steam, it's really nice that I don't have to anymore.
Also, think of the time savings...it only has to save you what, 30mins over the lifetime of the product and it's more cost effective (assuming you're on 20quid an hour , and I suspect that Kyle's hourly rate is probably nearer two to three times that - and I'd wager you value you personal time a lot more)

Re: The cost of AvP on Steam - Greedy?
maybe this is why they haven't worked on lowering the price
because there is a lot of us out there who want the digital downloads for convince
maybe we are responsible for making this money monster?

I could understand your point if you brought it from a shop but when you can order it to your door from say play or amazon for the day of release it doesnt really make any difference if you buy it of steam or retail.

Re: The cost of AvP on Steam - Greedy?
Unfortunately Rash i am still unable to get the information regarding steam and avp, conflicting quotes of our suppliers and completeley understand your reasoning regarding multiple copies of the game.
The comments regarding steam, well i have just pre-ordered avp - bbc2 and bioshock 2 all from steam. Now i think to myself i am crazy as i can get all these at trade price but it because of steam i havent. The point olly made applies to myself soley for convenience.

Re: The cost of AvP on Steam - Greedy?
Anyone know why Steam generally costs more? who sets the prices for it?, Do Valve add on a few quid for themselves?

Re: The cost of AvP on Steam - Greedy?
I already pre-ordered 2 copies on disc since it was a saving of over £20 for me, and in time whilst it is convenient to have it on steam the game will be played then forgot about at some point, and I still have an extra £20 to buy on some other useless item :P

Cooool, so I guess that means we can buy the cost effective "your e-tailer" version and then activate through steam for life-time digital download and patches?

i am going to buy one copy of the game on disk and try it when it turns up
