Nvidia GT300 yields are under 2%

How many worked out of the (4 x 104) 416 candidates? Try 7. Yes, Northwood was hopelessly optimistic - Nvidia got only 7 chips back. Let me repeat that, out of 416 tries, it got 7 'good' chips back from the fab. Oh how it must yearn for the low estimate of 20%, talk about botched execution. To save you from having to find a calculator, that is (7 / 416 = .01682), rounded up, 1.7% yield.
Written by Charlie Demerjian so take it with a huge sack of salt but interesting to read, and he does get quite a few things right no matter how much he hates Nvidia

They get a wafer of chips, which cost them $5000, theres 104 usable on that wafer, they got 4 wafers back making 416 chips.
Out of that they only got 7 to work.

Re: Nvidia GT300 yields are under 2%

At that rate to break even they would have to sell each chip (not card just the chip) for $2857.

This is however only the first lot, theres generaly bugs to be worked out in the next spin.
My worry is this though, being Nvidia I think they will put the 7 working chips on cards and demo them at some kind of launch to show the world that there not as far behind AMD as they actually are, i.e a paper launch, then we will have to wait months after to buy the cards, by which time everyone will have gone out and bought nice DX11 AMD cards.
Still a **** up of this scale couldn't have happened to a nicer company.

Re: Nvidia GT300 yields are under 2%

Not defending nVidia but with every new chip made there is a big fallout, my company has this problem all the time and it's usually picked up by the chip manufacturers.

If this is full production then there is something seriously wrong!!

Re: Nvidia GT300 yields are under 2%

This one seems to be worse than before, mind you there most of there 8xxx series were faulty so maybe not, If you follow Nvidia closely you will see there a pretty shady bunch, they do end up bringing good cards out but there business practices leave a lot to be desired.

Re: Nvidia GT300 yields are under 2%

This is how GPU models generally work though isn't it? Nvidia in particular.

You develop the top of the range cards, and try to get as high a success rate as possible. The ones that fail to varying degrees are then released as the less powerful cards aren't they? This then covers the costs until they can inprove manufacturing costs and actually get more of the top of the range cards successfully manufactured.
