Re: World of Warcraft Starter Edition

Hmmm, far too restrictive imho.

There are other games out there that are fully FTP.

I dont see why they need to continue with WoW anyway. Time to let it start to die off and concentrate on WoW-2, isn't it???

Re: World of Warcraft Starter Edition

Why would you have a WoW-2 when there are constant updates.. The amount that game has changed since launch is just... hard to comprehend.
It is more a less a whole a new game every patch.

Re: World of Warcraft Starter Edition

At 11.4 million players...is it really time to let it die? lol
There's constant new content being released and like Kris said, a lot of stuff changes every patch. Youd have to go into the game to release how popualated and busy the game world still is. They are working on a new mmo though arnt they?

11.4 MILLION?

I totally didn't realise there were THAT Many idiots in the world.

I hate the pay to play dynamic. I dont see WHY it has to happen. The fact there are more and more FTP games surfacing is proof it dosn't need to be done.

Pay for the game but then dont charge me 10 a month to continue playing something I have already payed for.

Have you actually played WoW before, Az, or just jumping on the bandwagon that it sucks and only "idiots" play it?

Denied.

Plus Az, the Game is Free now (expansions aren't but the original is) and it's just that if it's a good game and people don't mind paying to play each month, where's the harm? Other than to the players wallet.

Re: World of Warcraft Starter Edition

Yes I play STO, but LIZ pays for that.

I will admit, that I am being a hypocrite here, but I REALLY hate paying for that too.

I paid for the game and I really dont see why I should have to continue to pay for it.

WoW, STO etc are aLL guilty of taking us for a ride imho.

I will be cancelling my STO payments soon anyway, cant afford to play it with no job. lol.

However, the new FTP games on steam are quite interesting. I think I might just be switching to Champions Online..

Re: World of Warcraft Starter Edition

If you play it as much as others play WoW then the cost is off-set easily. The first month I played DC:U I hammered it constantly, it was more than worth the subscription fee. I only cancelled because since it was so new there was a severe lack of end-game content.

I played WoW for a while paying the sub for about three months before I just grew bored of it, but that's not because it was bad or not worth it, I was just too late to the party and didn't feel right playing it as a low level character while everyone was cruising about with top-tier ****.

As soon as The Old Republic comes out, they can charge 20 a month, I'll still pay it, I'll still get more value out of it than most likely any game I've played before. Considering the constant updates MMO's get, they're more worth the monthly fee's than almost all releases at full-price these days.

Re: World of Warcraft Starter Edition

Plus the monthly subscription is the same today than it was when Vanilla launched.

It's not like you aint getting anything for your money. With the odd exception, the servers are very reliable (at least nowadays they are), the game is constantly being upgraded / improved. Even when you look at it at a little under a hundred pounds a year, in that year you get the equivilent of 3 or 4 games launched in the way of new content being added at major patches.

To me, 7.99 a month is nothing to pay for the amount of time I can kill knocking about in Azeroth

I totally agree, 9 a month is less than 1 a day, which gives me endless entertainment when I grow bored of other things. I'd rather spend that 9 on a game that will be there every single day of the month, than spend 9 on a round of drinks that'll last all of 15 minutes, or on a taxi home, or on getting into a club that plays ****e music.

Not saying that I don't go out to clubs/with friends as the sterotypical WoW player is painted out to be a non-socialising weirdo. But I'm happier knowing that the money is spent on me being able to switch on my pc, hang out with friends, get drunk and leave at any point I become bored/tired with the knowledge I don't need to worry of a hangover in the morning, taxi ride home with a weirdo etc etc.

Besides, I've met some of my best friends through WoW, I'd not have known about GameOn if it wasn't for Wedge, wouldn't have met Loopy or the Bromley crew without it. If those 2 reasons, including the many other people I've met, skills in team work I've gained and confidence in leadership aren't enough for paying 9 a month for, well, I've clearly been doing the wrong thing for 6 years

I might be super defensive on WoW, but it's been a big influence in my life, sure it's "just a computer game" - but the people in it aren't, and they're the reasons I love it.

Re: World of Warcraft Starter Edition

I completely agree, ive spent more than 9 quid a month on things much less worthwhile. The way I see it, I have very limited money at the moment, WoW gives me hours of entertainment for the price of say, a budget Steam game of which ill play a bit sure but get bored pretty quickly then want more games to keep me entertained. 9 quid is a small price to pay for the constant content updates and amusements it gives me, its good value for money.

Ive met some awesome people so far on WoW, guild friends, randoms in Azaroth etc and it has allowed me to get to know people better through it, people on here for example.
I obviously know Heather and Dawson through Wedge but if that meeting between them had never happened I wouldn't have the pleasure of knowing them now which would be a great shame. Not only that, It gives me and Wedge something to do together.

I get more out of that 9 quid than I would if I did several other things.

Re: World of Warcraft Starter Edition

to be fair, in some places of the country 9 quid would just cover the cost of a sandwich, packet of crisps and a drink.

Personally what i object to, at least in LOTRO's case is this.

I Consider myself a founder member, i paid 180 quid, at the launch of lotro for a life time subscription.

now it free for everyone

but thats not what im annoied at.
What im annoied at (at least in lotro) is that every other UI paine there is an advert... to buy things ... from the lotro store... im a VIP+ member.. i get it all anyway. why are you braking my EMERSIVE experiance by trying to squeze cash out of me... when ive already paid... a lot more than most people.

to summerise.

If your going F2P, do it, but while your doing it, make sure not to brake the experiance of the game.

if your worried about braking it, stay on P2P.

On the subject of this, whenever there has been major downtime Blizzard has gifted people with days of extra playing time to make up for it (if you have a character on any of the servers affected).
