Exclamation Benchmark: Prey

The June 2005 issue of PC Gamer revealed that the game uses a heavily modified Doom 3 engine capable of rendering "huge cavernous spaces as well as more traditional passages". The game also supports the dynamic portals that were seen in the 1997/1998 video clips, which are used by friends and foes alike.

The game also has the ability to change gravity in many parts of the game, via small items that need to be shot to become active, which is used to solve many puzzles throughout the game. Also, various landscapes in the game (large rocks, for example) have their own gravity that overrides the normal gravity in the game.

Two vehicles make an appearance; one is a flying vehicle used frequently for travel and attacking (as well as puzzle solving), and one is only used during a small portion of the game.

The bar that the game begins in is fully interactive, utilizing usable restroom facilities, a TV with various channels, a fully playable Pac-Man-like game, several video casino machines, and a jukebox that plays songs from Prey's soundtrack.

Prey is the first major title to utilize the new Triton distribution system, whereby users can play the game while streaming from the service. Triton uses "next-gen technology" to reduce download times drastically.

Installation and use of the benchmarking program is very simple and straightforward, but if there are any questions please just ask. You will also notice that there are a number of different demos that can be run, we will be using the default demo to save any confusion. This can of course be discussed.

Can you please submit your results in the following template:

As well as a copy and paste of the results page that the demo will throw up for you once it is complete.

The demo does work with the benchmark program so in effect this is a free benchmark. It also uses Open GL for its graphics due to the engine being used, this should slightly favour Nvidia cards depending on the settings used. Afaik it also has optimisations for dual core/HyperThreaded systems.

That score does seem very high, I would take a wild guess and say antialiasing is not being applied here. If you could run the test again, but this time force 4x AA and 16x AF from the Nvidia control panel as well as in the HOC benchmark app that should either confirm the score or confirm what im guessing.

The only reason I question the score is that the X1K series cards are actually (supposed to be) faster with AA applied then the 7 series cards. I appreciate that you are on a dual core cpu, but again, looking at my scores as a comparison, does dual core make up for a 550MHz clock speed difference? Maybe.

Let us know how you get on and if anyone else with a 7 Series card could do me the favour of running the benchmark so we have some figures to compare to id be very grateful.

As usual you were right, went into the control panel and forced 4xAA and 16xAS (Pic to prove) then benched again.

More like it chap.

For a reference point stock/reference 7900GT clocks are 450MHz core and 660MHz (1320MHz DDR) on the memory. Thats a comfortable overclock there to 520/750, grats.

Also been doing some reading and it would appear that Prey, like Quake 4, supports SMP so it will be tough for anyone with a single core cpu to keep pace with the dual core massive. Again great score my man.

Er ... thanx

Thing is i haven't tweaked a single thing, all stock !! Yes the XFX 7900GT 'XTREME' comes with those stock speeds (See Here). If your at the LAN i'll let you loose

And to think, all this from a shuttle

Just be *very* careful when overclocking the pre-overclocked 7900 series cards, there have been more then a few issues with them, mainly to do with the memory and the delta clock (a part of the core that runs about 40MHz faster then the rest so when you overclock that gets bumped too). Afaik if you do get issues there is a bios fix available for the delta problem. Just take it easy on the girl.
